Back to the 18th century when slaves arrived on the island from Africa and Madagascar. Life was hard on sugar plantations so slaves devised their own entertainment. Creole songs, folk dancing and homemade musical instruments. Long after slavery was abolished sega songs and dances were still considered with suspicion by many Mauritians.

Sega music can be heard all over Mauritius, though its popularity as a modern-day art form is often credited to 1950s and 60s Creole singer Jean Alphonse Ravaton also known as Ti-Frére, whose legendary performance at the ‘Night of the Sega at Mount Le Morne’ in 1964 was a turning point which saw Sega emerge from the shadows and into the mainstream.

Nowadays, mainly on weekends, Mauritians often get together around a beach fire to play, sing and sega. Each island has its own distinctive style. The outfits worn for dancing are also emblematic of Mauritian culture in which the dancers have very specific costumes. While ladies wear a long open skirt printed with bright hibiscus flowers or the Mauritian flag and men wear tight cropped trousers and shirts.

The sega dance is a simple dance with repeating steps. An elaborate description of the Sega dance would start with the man standing, hands placed on the hips. While he waits for the woman to approach him, he moves his hips to the rhythmic percussion. Once face to face, both partners start swaying the hips gently to a rather slow tune. But as the tempo increases, the hip sways become faster and faster, and other dance steps are introduced such as bending of the knees to lower the body to the floor, while maintaining the mandatory hip movements.
